Biles, Chiles take Secret U.S. Classic all-around titles

  • HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., Aug. 2, 2014 — Simone Biles of Spring, Texas/ World Champions Centre, and Jordan Chiles of Vancouver, Wash./ Naydenov Gymnastics Inc., took home the senior and junior all-around titles, respectively, at the 2014 Secret U.S. Classic. The event, held at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill., was the final women’s gymnastics qualifier to the 2014 P&G Championships Aug. 20-24 in Pittsburgh, as well as a tune-up event for those already qualified.


    Biles won the senior title with a 61.700, showing off her new floor exercise routine where she stuck nearly every tumbling pass and nailed her signature high-flying Amanar on vault. Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif./Gym-Max Gymnastics, was second (60.050) in the senior division, followed by Maggie Nichols of Little Canada, Minn./Twin City Twisters, in third (57.600). Biles also took the vault and floor titles with scores of 15.200 and 15.800, respectively. She also tied with Ross for the balance beam gold medal with a 15.250. Ashton Locklear of Hamlet, N.C./Everest Gymnastics, rounded out the senior event titles, easily capturing the uneven bars gold medal with an impressive 15.700.


    In the junior division, Chiles took the title with a 57.350. She excited the crowd with her high-flying releases on bars and engaging floor routine. Nia Dennis of Westerville, Ohio/Buckeye Gymnastics, received the silver medal (56.750), and Norah Flatley of Cumming, Iowa/Chow’s Gymnastics and Dance Institute, and Deanne Soza of Orem, Utah/ Arete Gymnastics, tied for the bronze medal (56.450). Dennis added the bars gold medal to her haul with a routine that scored a 14.450. Flatley won the balance beam with a 15.100; Ragan Smith of Lewisville, Texas/Texas Dreams Gymnastics, received gold on floor (14.350); and Chiles earned top honors on vault with a 14.900.


    To qualify to the P&G Championships, senior elites had to score at least a 54.000 in the all-around; have a three-event total of 41.250; or earn a total of 28.000 on two events. Juniors had to have a 52.000 in the all-around at the Secret U.S. Classic. The gymnasts who qualified for the P&G Championships are listed below.

    With competition on both the junior and senior levels, performances at the 2014 P&G Championships will determine all-around and individual national champions, as well as the national team for the junior and senior elite levels. The nationals also traditionally serve as part of the selection process for the U.S. Team for the World Championships. This year, the Senior Pan American Championship Team will also be selected at the 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships.


    The USA Gymnastics National Congress and Trade Show will be held in conjunction with 2014 U.S. Gymnastics Championships at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
